Memorial Day celebrations were limited this year due to COVID-19 and current social distancing restrictions, but each of the local American Legion posts met at area cemeteries to remember those who have served their country.
While there were no parades held this year in Milford, North Webster or Syracuse, some still gathered on Monday, May 25, at each of the area cemeteries to remember and honor those who have died.
Members of American Legion Post 226 held a ceremony at Milford Cemetery. Those who attended gathered together to pray over those who have fallen and celebrated them with a 21-gun salute and performing of Taps. A moment of silence was given for two members of the post who passed away in the past year.
In North Webster, American Legion Post 253 gathered at North Webster Cemetery at 11 a.m. Names of those soldiers who had passed this year were read. Post members then performed a 21-gun salute and Taps was played for the fallen soldiers.
Residents gathered at Syracuse Cemetery at 1:30 p.m. with Syracuse-Wawasee American Legion Post 223 to remember those soldiers who have passed away in the past year. The numbers lost from the Syracuse and Turkey Creek Township area in all wars were also read. The Legion members also ended their service with a 21-gun salute and the playing of Taps.
