Diving Fills In Final Pieces To State Puzzle
MISHAWAKA – The top eight from the Penn Diving Regional made up the final group of participants for this weekend’s IHSAA Girls Swim State Finals. Including in that octet are a Northridge trio and a Concord diver that will look for state glory later this week.
Northridge went one-two at the Penn Regional Tuesday night, with Kaitlin Simons backing up her Elkhart sectional title with a 491.25 blue ribbon. Jiselle Miller was right on her heels, scoring 488.40. Northridge added a third to the state finals sheet when Evie Long placed sixth at 400.85, just five-hundredths off of Darian McAdams of Rensselaer Central.
Concord added Brooke Farnham to the state lineup after she took the eighth and final spot with a 393 series. The Minutemen will have at least one participant in 11 of the 12 events this weekend at IUPUI.
Lindsay Gizzi of South Bend Adams was third at 474.75, followed by Penn’s Bailey Betzer at 445.60, and Betzer’s teammate, Kayla Ryan, was seventh at 396.55.
Mishawaka was the end of the road for Tippecanoe Valley’s Elaina Dishon, who finished 20th in the standings after accumulating 191.40 in the preliminary rounds. Dishon was the fourth qualifier from the Warsaw sectional. Just Grace Ulrich of Pioneer made it past the opening round of the regional representing the Warsaw group, scoring 338.75 points to place 11th. Isabelle Ahlenius of Culver Academy was 14th at 227.45 and Laine McLochlin of Logansport was 18th at 209.45.
The diving preliminary rounds will begin Saturday morning at the IUPUI Natatorium. Finalists will come back and compete during the swim finals, which begin at 1 p.m. Swim preliminaries start at 6 p.m. Friday night.
