Warsaw Man Sentenced For Strangling, Battering Pregnant Woman
WARSAW — A Warsaw man will serve six months in jail after strangling and battering a pregnant woman.
Kyle Logan Backus, 21, 920 Anchorage Road Lot 42, Warsaw, was charged with strangulation, a level 6 felony; and domestic battery, a class A misdemeanor. A charge of domestic battery to a pregnant woman was dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Backus also has a pending case for domestic battery to a pregnant woman out of Whitley County.
Backus was sentenced in Kosciusko County Superior Court 3 on Thursday, Jan. 30.
On June 3, 2019, a Warsaw Police officer spoke with a woman who said her daughter was battered by Backus. According to court documents, the woman’s daughter was nine weeks pregnant at the time of the incident and had injuries to her neck and chin area.
The officer spoke with the woman’s daughter, who said she and Backus had a disagreement when Backus spit in her face and pushed her against a wall, grabbing her throat. Backus then started punching her legs and face, causing her nose to bleed.
For strangulation, Kosciusko County Superior Court 3 Judge Joe Sutton gave Backus a 2 1/2 year sentence, with six months to be served in the Kosciusko County Jail and two years suspended on formal probation. For domestic battery, Backus received a one-year suspended sentence. Each sentence will be served concurrently.
A no-contact order has also been established between Backus and the victim in the case.
