Children Read To Greyhounds Through Monthly WCPL Program
WARSAW — Every month at the Warsaw Community Public Library, children of all ages have the opportunity to read aloud to greyhounds.
Many children stopped by the library on Saturday, Jan. 25, to read to four greyhounds who came to WCPL to relax while hearing some stories.
The “Greyt Readers” program is made possible by volunteers with American Greyhound, a not-for-profit organization whose primary goal is to find homes for unwanted greyhounds. In the “Greyt Readers” program, volunteers and dogs go to local libraries in order for children to spend time with, and read to, greyhounds. The program has been happening at WCPL for about a year. The local “Greyt Readers” group also holds events at Goshen Public Library.
“It’s a really great organization to volunteer for,” said Heather Peyatt, who was volunteering at the event with her greyhound, Bing. “Greyhounds are so kind and gentle, and they just put kids right at ease.”
Peyatt said the group attends any kind of local dog event that they can. The greyhounds have also visited at nursing facilities.
Aside from Peyatt, Biktoriya Lutsiv, Brad Wear, Chris Egolf and Theresa Schuster were volunteering at the event.
The next Greyt Readers event at Warsaw Community Public Library is from 11 a.m to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 29.
