Violet Mae Elder “Maize”, 76, Pierceton, passed away surrounded by her loving family at 1:22 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 29, 2019, at Fort Wayne Regional Hospital. She was born on Oct. 23, 1943, in St. Louis, Mo. to Kariss and Vecie (Calahan) Steele. Violet was united in marriage to Max Loren Elder on Oct. 28, 1961 in Pierceton.
As a child she attended school in Wellsville, Mo. She moved to Pierceton when she was 14 years old. She worked at Pletcher’s Grocery Store in Pierceton. Many people knew Violet as “Maize”, but she was best known as Grandma Maize by everyone. You could always pop in at her house at anytime and there was always food on the stove. More than anything, she loved her boys and grandkids. They were the light of her life. Violet had the biggest heart and was an amazing mother and grandmother. She could light up a room with her smile and laughter. God definitely broke the mold when He created her.
Violet is survived by husband, Max Elder of Pierceton; four children, Max (Lisa) Elder, Mitchell Elder, Mike Elder and Tony (Nicole) Elder all of Pierceton; ten grandchildren; Sara Elder, Max (Sidney) Elder, Tyler (Brittni) Elder, Trent Elder, Dylan (Briana) Marshall, Garrett Elder, Cassidy Elder, Hailey Elder, Jesse Elder and Julie Elder. In addition, she is survived by seven great-grandchildren; siblings, Peggy (Buster) Pherigo of Pierceton, Ruth Devlin, Eddie Steele and Howard Steele all of Missouri.
There will be a “Celebration of Life” dinner at 2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020, at the Pierceton American Legion upstairs. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please bring photos and stories to share.
