Monticello Man Charged With Alleged Vehicle Theft
WARSAW — A Monticello man was recently charged with alleged vehicle theft.
Cody Michael Pope, 27, 3230 East Division Street Road, Monticello, was charged with theft, a level 6 felony.
On July 26, an officer with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office investigated a report of vehicle theft. The vehicle owner said it was stolen by Pope on the previous night, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
The owner said that Pope, himself and another friend were staying at the friend’s mother’s house the night of the theft, July 25. The unnamed friend said that Pope had been residing at her mother’s house for a week prior.
After she and the vehicle owner fell asleep on July 25, they woke the next morning to discover Pope and the owner’s vehicle missing. The owner said the last time he saw his vehicle was at approximately 11 p.m. on July 25.
Both said that Pope had access to the keys for the vehicle, but did not have permission to drive it. They said Pope may have taken to Monticello where they knew he had family.
Later on July 26, the stolen vehicle was found abandoned in a field near Monticello by the Whitley County Sheriff’s Office, said the affidavit.
A warrant was issued for Pope’s arrest by the Kosciusko County Court.
Pope was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail, Dec. 5 with a bond of $11,000 surety and cash.
