Michigan State Police Identify Skeletal Remains From 1988
PAW PAW, Mich. — Michigan State Police identified the skeletal remains of a woman found off Interstate 196 in Covert Township in 1988 using genealogy DNA.
Police said the remains were identified as Marcia Kaylynn Bateman, 28, of Oklahoma City, who had been reported missing for decades.
In October, more than 30 years ago, a hunter stumbled across the remains in the woods. Investigators nicknamed the woman “196 Jane” after they were unable to identify her.
In 2018, a forensic reconstruction was done with the skull of the woman in hope of finding someone who recognized her.
In April 2019 investigators were donated $2,800 from Brian Methner, a managing partner at Kalamazoo Mortgage, to create a family tree.
A femur was shipped to the genealogy service and the bone marrow was shipped to the genealogy service.
