Mary Alice Caughell, 86, North Manchester, formerly of Laketon, passed away at 4:23 a.m. on Nov. 10, 2019, at Peabody Healthcare Center, North Manchester. On Feb. 2, 1933, she was born in White County, to Bruno J. and Thelma (Hathaway) Peters. She was one of six children.
After graduating from Burnettsville High School, in 1951, she married James R. “Bob” Caughell on Sept. 14, 1952. The two were wed for fifty-two years before Mr. Caughell passed away on Aug. 26, 2004. During their time together, she worked at the U.S. Postal Service for thirty years and was a former Postmaster, before retiring in 1995.
She was a great example of what a Christian should be and was a member at North Manchester Missionary Church. She was always involved in church activities and attended church every Sunday, until her health began to decline and lived her life for God. Beside faith, family was the next most important part of Mrs. Caughell’s life. She was a mother-in-law that always thought of her daughter-in-law’s as daughters. She was a great mother and made sure the kids and house were always in order. Her grandchildren were always her pride and loved spending time with them. In her spare time, she enjoyed being outside gardening and tending to her flowers.
Mary Alice Caughell will be forever remembered by her two sons, Gregg (Terri) Caughell, Laketon; and Douglas (Deb) Caughell, North Manchester; three brothers, Jerry (Ruth) Peters, Evansville; Allan Dean Peters, Burnettsville; and Glen (Jean) Peters, Indianapolis; one sister Anita Smith, Holiday, Fla.; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Christine Reynolds.
