Panthers Can’t Hold On In Leo Loss
CEDARVILLE — NorthWood couldn’t hold onto a 6-0 halftime advantage, and the Panthers closed with a 10-6 loss to host Leo in Sectional 19 semifinal action Friday night.
Wood scored on Jerson Sanchez field goals from 39 and 31 yards out in the second quarter to take its tenuous advantage into halftime. But Leo found the end zone first with a 10-yard Peyton Wall touchdown run with 1:03 remaining in the third quarter, and Carson McCauley kicked a field goal from 29 yards out for a little insurance with 2:51 left in the game.
The Panthers out-gained their hosts 223-200 net offensive yards but were plagued by four turnovers — a lost fumble and three interceptions — while failing to score a single touchdown in the season-ending loss.
Nate Newcomer led all rushers with 191 yards on 24 carries but connected on just five of 15 passing attempts for 94 yards and was picked off three times. Jaden Miller made three catches for 55 receiving yards but was limited to just two runs worth 10 yards, and Kyle Sellers finished with 19 yards in two rushes. The Black Crunch defense was led by Miller and Ben Mestach, who finished with 12 tackles each, as well as Ben Fattorusso, who tallied 11.
Peyton Wall amassed 183 yards in 21 rushes for the Lions, while Mason Sheron finished with 37 yards on 11 carries. Jackson Barbour went 5-of-9 passing for 38 yards and was picked off once, by Newcomer.
Leo moves to 10-1 and advances to play for the Sectional 19 championship at unbeaten East Noble after the Knights buried DeKalb, 42-14, in Friday’s other semifinal.
NorthWood closes the year at 7-4.
