Tennis Awards Starting To Fly In
INDIANAPOLIS – With boys tennis hitting its final days of the season, the Indiana High School Tennis Coaches Association has begun releasing its postseason awards train. With that early this week includes the Academic All-State individual and team lists as well as the North-South All-Star rosters.
For Academic All-State, there were several from the general area that made the First Team. Goshen’s duo of Ryan Harmelink and Wyatt Fisher were both chosen, as were the Penn trio of Jackson Buhring, Jack Dinnon and Peter Yang, Bethany Christian’s Caleb Shenk, Plymouth’s Hugh Smith and Westview’s Kurtis Davis.
Honorable Mention Academic All-State went to NorthWood’s Jack Wysong, Warsaw’s Caleb Williams, Wawasee’s duo of Zach Leedy and Colin Rhoades, Northridge’s Gabe Rodino, the Fairfield duo of Riley Behles and Isaac Inniger, the St. Joe duo of Riley Mandell and Ryan Bruneel, Bethany Christian’s Nathan Oostland, East Noble’s Lucas Denton, West Noble’s Dillon Sumowski and Westview’s Justin Schwartz.
The North-South All-Stars has three area players involved for the tournament that will take place Nov. 2 at DePauw University. NorthWood’s Wes Troyer and Westview’s Davis were chosen among nine players for the Northwest All-Stars. Rodino, West Noble’s Joel Mast and Peru’s Ryan Smith were all chosen to represent the Northeast. NorthWood head coach was tabbed Tuesday as the coach for the Northwest team.
Also in local tennis news is the individual state tournament, which NorthWood’s one doubles team of Wysong and Landon Holland are still alive. The duo, which are 20-1 on the season and 5-0 in the state tournament, will meet Hobart’s Charles Tomaga and Nicholas Kolopanis (14-6, 4-0). The two teams will meet Saturday in the first semi-final of the Portage Regional. Waiting for the winner of that match is Bremen’s Shay Kyser and Mason Porter (15-5, 5-0), which will play for the regional title and a shot at the IHSAA State Finals. NorthWood and Bremen waged a classic match on Sept. 4 at DeSantis Courts, won in a three-set thriller by NorthWood 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-2.
The IHSTECA All-Region and All-State teams will be released in the coming days as the IHSAA state tournament wraps up.
