Winona Lake Receives $192,000 For Roadwork
WINONA LAKE — The town of Winona Lake has been notified that it will receive $192,000 from the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Community Crossings Initiative.
The money will go toward milling and resurfacing roads in Winona Lake, according to Town Manager Craig Allebach.
On Tuesday, Oct. 15, the town council is expected to give approval to seek bids for the road work. The meeting starts at 6 p.m.
The roadwork will begin construction next spring, according to Allebach.
The funds received by Winona Lake are part of a large pool of money distributed to 228 other cites, towns and counties in Indiana following the July 2019 call for projects, said a news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The Community Crossings program has provided more than $612 million in state matching funds for construction projects. The latest round garnered more applications than dollars available—making the call for projects highly competitive.
To qualify for funding, local governments must provide local matching funds, 50 percent for larger communities or 25 percent for smaller communities, from a funding source approved for road and bridge construction.
Participating communities must also submit an INDOT-approved asset management plan for maintaining existing roads and bridges. State law requires annually that 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer, said the news release.
