ELKHART MEMORIAL 21, WAWASEE 14
Wawasee came up just short in its bid for a Northern Lakes Conference win Friday night against Memorial.
A Charger touchdown with 6:15 to go in the fourth quarter was the difference. After falling behind 14-0 in the first half, Wawasee rallied to tie the game, the first score a 32-yard touchdown pass from Parker Young to Ethan Garza. The second score was all Young, who called his number for 12 yards to tie the game just seconds into the fourth quarter.
It was the closet Wawasee had been to an opponent in the fourth quarter since leading over Lakeland in week one.
Memorial’s first two scores came on an interception return for a touchdown and a 57-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Lehner to Derrick Woods.
Wawasee finally got its rushing game going, gaining 124 yards to go with 106 through the air from Young, who led the Warriors with 56 yards rushing. Levi Brown added 10 carries for 33 yards.
Wawasee (1-7, 0-6 NLC) will visit Goshen next week.
KNOX 28, TRITON 6
Triton struck first but couldn’t hold on as the Trojans dropped their fifth straight in a Hoosier North Athletic Conference game in Knox Friday.
Gavyn Ness staked the visitors to an initial 6-0 lead with a 40-yard run in the first quarter, but it was all Knox from there as the Redskins scored a trio of touchdowns in the opening frame bouncing back from a close, 12-7 loss at Class A No. 1 Pioneer last week.
The Trojans finished with 208 offensive yards to Knox’s 360, Connor Pitney completing 9-of-18 passes for 112 yards, and Hunter McIntyre rushing for 53 yards on 21 carries. Payton Baugh rushed for a game-high 11 yards and three touchdowns, while Cade Short and Gavin Martinez rushed for 77 and 72 yards, respectively, for the Redskins.
Knox moves to 7-1 and 5-1 in the HNAC behind 6-0 Pioneer. Triton slides to 2-6 overall and 1-5 in conference play. The Trojans travel to Winamac next week.
