Trojans Bow Out; Eagles Advance
BREMEN — Triton tennis bowed out of the season with a sweep at the hands of the Bremen Sectional-favorite and host Lions in Wednesday night’s opener at DeSantis Courts.
The Trojans took a total of just six games from Bremen en route to the loss. Gavin Greer won two games in the opening set of his 3 singles match with Dawson Hickman but fell, 6-2, 6-0. Connor Large fell 6-1, 6-1 to Carson Miller in their 2 singles match. John Gardner fell 6-1, 6-0 to Mark Bahr at 1 singles, Cole McKinney and Chandler Westafer lost 6-0, 6-1 to Brett Yelaska and Mariano DeLeon at 2 doubs, and Jared Bules and Tyler Heckaman were shut out by a strong 1 doubles effort by Shay Kyser and Mason Porter.
Triton closes the year at 8-10 after earning a share of the Hoosier North Athletic Conference title.
The Lions advance to play Plymouth in the semifinals Thursday. The Pilgrims have won 22 straight sectional titles, and Bremen is playing for its first title since 2003. John Glenn and LaVille play in the opposite bracket with the championship slated for Friday at 4:30 p.m.
WARSAW SECTIONAL
Meanwhile, down the road in Warsaw, Columbia City edged out Whitko 3-2 in their sectional-opener Wednesday.
Kendall Smith outlasted David Ousley in three sets at 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, to give the Eagles their third match point. Eli Jones put away Aiden Hoffman, 6-2, 6-0 at 2 singles, and Joshua Miner and Toby Krider topped Kaige Michael and Jonathan Strayer, 6-0, 6-1 at 2 doubles.
Whitko’s 1 doubles team of Jackson Hollenbaugh and Devon Akers survived in the state doubles tournament via a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Evan Cearbaugh and Tanveer Singh.
City advances to play Wawasee in the Warsaw tourney semifinals Thursday at 4:30 p.m., when the host Tigers play Tippecanoe Valley. Finals are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday.
