NORTHWOOD EARNS ANOTHER TITLE AT BREMEN
NorthWood won its third tournament of the season, beating Wawasee in the championship of the Bremen Tourney on Saturday.
The Panthers beat Prairie Heights, John Glenn and Culver Academy all 2-0, then took care of Wawasee 25-12, 25-12 in the championship game. Class 3-A No. 3 NorthWood, which also won titles at Prairie Heights and Concord earlier this season, have won 21 matches in a row dating back to Aug. 24 at the Tom Heck Tourney at Penn. Leading NorthWood were Maddy Payne with 33 kills and seven blocks and Caroline Mullet with 85 assists and 35 digs.
Wawasee beat South Bend Adams and Triton in two and Bremen in three to reach the final. Wawasee had big numbers at the net, led by Emma Dippon’s 23 kills. Liz Kleopfer had 19 kills to go with 27 assists, Leslie Vazquez and Molly Jones each had 17 kills and a combined nine blocks. Vazquez added 23 digs and Madi Simmons chipped in 17 digs and seven aces.
Triton went 1-2 in pool play, losing to Wawasee and Bremen but coming back to defeat Adams in two. Triton did not submit stat leaders for the tournament.
DWENGER WINS WARSAW TITLE
Fort Wayne Dwenger outlasted the field at the 16-team to claim honors at the Warsaw Tournament.
Dwenger beat Lake Central in the championship while Angola held off Warsaw for third place. The Tigers beat Fort Wayne Snider and Rochester in two sets but lost to Lake Central in two in bracket play. Angola then beat Warsaw 25-17, 25-22 in the third place match. Avery Hales had 59 assists for the tournament to pace Warsaw, and Kylie Smith added 39 digs on the day.
Tippecanoe Valley had a tough day, finishing 1-3 in its action. The Vikings beat South Central, but lost to Homestead, Angola and Jimtown. Player stats for Valley were not provided.
WAWASEE SPLITS AT CENTRAL NOBLE TOURNEY
Wawasee beat Winamac and Northwestern among its work at the Central Noble Freshman Tourney. The Lady Warriors won both of its games 2-0, but lost both of its matches against East Noble and Central Noble 2-1. Zoe Taylor, Alexis Mishler, Blair Harker and Addy Trimble were all tabbed as standouts for the Lady Warriors.
EDGEWOOD TAKES SECOND IN 7TH GRADE ACTION
Edgewood’s seventh grade team placed second out of five teams at the Westview Tournament. Edgewood beat Eastside, Westview and Concord in two sets but lost to tourney champs Angola 25-19, 25-23.
EDGEWOOD CLAIMS 8TH GRADE TITLE
Edgewood broke a three-way tie with a win over Concord to claim the trophy at the Westview Tournament. Edgewood, Angola and Concord all finished atop the standings with wins against one another, but Edgewood’s 25-19, 25-10 win over Concord put the Tigers atop the grid in the five-team tourney. Edgewood defeated Eastside in two and Westview in two and lost to Angola in three.
LAKEVIEW 7TH GRADE TAKES SECOND AT DUNES
Lakeview advanced to the title game of the Dunes Tournament, going the distance in a runner-up finish to NorthWood. Lakeview beat Winamac, North Judson and Niles in pool play, then took out Northridge and Lincoln to reach the final, where NorthWood won 20-25, 25-17, 15-7. Stat leaders for Lakeview included Maggie Hollon with 22 kills and 20 aces, Daihya Chupp with 32 assists, 15 aces and 11 kills and Abbey Peterson with 19 assists, 12 aces and eight kills. NorthWood did not supply their statistics.
LAKEVIEW 8TH GRADE NEARLY CLAIMS DUNES TITLE
Lakeview finished second among 19 teams at the Dunes Tournament. In pool play Lakeview beat Northridge, LaPorte and Pioneer and lost to Sturgis. In bracket play, Lakeview beat North Judson and New Prairie to reach the final, where Lakeview losst to LaPorte 25-19, 25-12. For Lakeview, Clara Porter had 30 assists, five aces and two kills and Kenzie Chivington had 15 kills, nine assists and six aces. Colette Blackburn added eight kills, Jael Namfukwe had 13 kills and two aces and Olivia Devenney had seven kills and seven aces.
MARIAN 3, GRACE 1
Grace’s volleyball team dropped a tight match at No. 22 Marian on Saturday.
The Lady Lancers (9-11, 5-4 Crossroads League) suffered a 3-1 defeat against the Knights (17-1, 7-1 CL). Despite a strong offensive performance from the Lady Lancers, Marian’s offense was too much.
Grace’s attack was led by 15 kills from Gabbey Harrington, 13 kills from Makaela Lochmueller and 12 kills from Katie Swanson. Alexa Hill added an outstanding 47 assists.
In the first set, the Lady Lancers started strong with each team trading blows to a 12-12 score. However, the Knights went on a 13-3 run and closed out the set, handing Grace a 25-16 defeat.
The Lady Lancers jumped out to an early lead in the second set. Kills from Harrington and Jadyn Block, followed by a block from Lochmueller, resulted in a 3-0 lead for Grace.
Grace held on to the lead until the Knights tied it up at 13-13. The score went back and forth before a 5-2 run propelled the Lady Lancers to a 25-21 win.
Grace dropped a hard-fought third set, 25-22. Six different players tallied kills to produce a 18-12 Grace lead, but the Knights responded with six unanswered points to tie the set at 18.
Despite late kills from Swanson and Harrington to push the score to 22-23, Marian finished with two consecutive kills to edge out the Lady Lancers, 25-22.
Although Grace put up a strong fight in the fourth set, Marian finished off the set with a 6-1 run, resulting in a 25-20 win to close out the match.
Emily Sharp and Gina Novotny anchored a busy Lancer defense. Sharp tallied 23 digs and two aces, while Novotny notched 19 digs.
Lochmueller recorded 2 block assists and a solo block to go along with 13 kills. Block added nine kills and four digs.
Hill nearly missed a double-double, producing nine digs with her 47 assists.
