Wawasee School Board Works On Updating District’s Vision Statement
SYRACUSE — During a special Wawasee School Board meeting Monday evening, Sept. 23, the board discussed adopting an updated vision statement for the school corporation.
James Flecker, director of personnel and legal services for the Wawasee Community School Corporation, said a vision statement needs to be looked at every three to five years. He noted the current vision statement for Wawasee schools is five paragraphs long while many nearby school corporations have vision statements only one or two sentences long.
“A vision statement is your future written in the present tense,” he said. Community, collaboration and equipping students to solve problems in the world were common themes taken from the current vision statement, he noted.
Flecker suggested summarizing the current vision statement in only one sentence, which eventually the board accomplished.
After roughly 45 minutes of discussion and dropping or adding several words, the board agreed on the following updated vision statement: “All Wawasee Community School Corporation students are confident, well-rounded, college and career ready citizens who possess integrity and positively impact their communities.”
The board did not vote on adopting the statement but will do so at the Oct. 8 regular monthly meeting. It was noted the Assessment, Curriculum and Teaching Committee will also look at the updated vision statement during its Oct. 7 meeting.
There were no other items on the agenda of Monday’s meeting.
