Warsaw Police And Warsaw-Wayne Fire To Conduct ‘Operation Clear Tracks’ Tuesday
WARSAW — Warsaw Police Department and Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory will support National Operation Clear Tracks Day by increasing law enforcement at Warsaw railroad crossings, Tuesday, Sept. 24.
The initiative aims to educate motorists on laws and safety while at railroad crossings, according to a news release from the city of Warsaw.
Motorists stopped on the tracks, driving around crossing gates or any other unsafe activity will be approached by an officer or fire official with a reminder about safety at railroad crossings. Motorists will be provided a flyer on rail safety and statistics.
Many of Warsaw’s train accidents occur due to cars stopped or stalled on the tracks. Motorists are reminded to look and listen for trains from all directions while approaching every railroad crossings. This includes crossings with unactivated crossing gates, the news release said.
The city encourages all motorists to obey all signs, warning lights and gates. Never stop on the tracks, even momentarily, while waiting for a traffic signal to change. The next train may come suddenly or an unexpected circumstance may prevent vehicles from moving in time.
Residents who see an emergency occurring at a crossing should locate the blue Emergency Notification System sign that displays a phone number and crossing identification number.
A call to that number will immediately connect with a railroad dispatcher from that specific railroad who can pinpoint the location and take appropriate action. A dispatcher can contact a train engineer within five to ten seconds of receiving a call to stop the train.
Operation Clear Tracks is part of Rail Safety Week that runs Sept. 22-28. The city of Warsaw supports the campaign and encourages residents to reflect on their own habits and make changes to protect their lives and the safety of train crew members.
