Volleyball Results: Sept. 11
INDIANA WESLEYAN 3, GRACE 0
Grace’s volleyball lost in three sets at No. 4 Indiana Wesleyan on Wednesday.
The Lady Lancers (4-9, 0-2 Crossroads League) were short-handed after not having their leading attacker Anna Frey due to injury.
The Wildcats (13-0, 2-0 CL) were dangerous in attack; IWU hit 47 kills at a .238 percentage to go along with 10 aces. Grace, conversely, had 31 kills at a .159 clip.
Grace started the match with back-to-back kills from freshman Katie Swanson, who got the start in place of Frey.
The Lady Lancers owned a 15-12 lead in the first set before IWU rattled off a 10-1 run. IWU used that momentum to win 25-20.
Grace held another small lead to start the second set. But the Wildcats used a 10-3 spurt to gain separation en route to a six-point win.
As was the story for the match, Grace started strong again in the third set. The Lady Lancers won nine of the first 12 points and stayed in front until the final moments.
Grace was serving for the set at 24-22, but the Wildcats used a kill and an ace to force extra points. Back-to-back kills from Makayla Bell and Deborah Michalski gave Grace another shot to win at 27-26, but the Wildcats won three straight points to clinch the sweep.
Swanson led Grace’s attack with nine kills, and Gabbey Harrington had seven kills and two block assists. Alexa Hill tallied 28 assists, 8 digs and 2 block assists, Caroline Mayer finished with 16 digs, and Emily Sharp added 10 digs.
The Lady Lancers return home for the first time in three weeks. Grace will host rival Bethel on Friday at 7 p.m. at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center.
TRITON 3, NORTH JUDSON 1
Triton pulled off one of its biggest upsets in recent volleyball memory. The Trojans strung together a 25-19, 26-24, 17-25, 25-18 victory over defending Class 2-A state champion North Judson. Against a Blue Jays lineup full of returners from last season’s title run, Triton easily played its best contest of the season. Leading Triton was Abbey Viers with 17 kills and three solo blocks. Lexia Hostrawser added eight kills and three aces.
Emma Hepler had 23 assists and two aces, and Dylanie Miller assisted on 12 points. The trio of Molly McFarland, Alyxa Viers and Jaela Faulkner combined for 58 digs, McFarland leading the team with 23 ups.
Triton’s JV also defeated North Judson 25-16, 25-12.
EDGEWOOD 8TH GRADE 2, CARROLL 0
Edgewood claimed a solid win against visiting Fort Wayne Carroll in a 25-24, 25-11 result. Stats were not provided.
EDGEWOOD 7TH GRADE 2, CARROLL 0
Edgewood also rang victorious in the seventh grade contest 25-17, 25-24.
