VALPARAISO — A man was shot by an Indiana State Trooper Wednesday, Sept. 4, after police say he stole a maintenance truck on the Toll Road.

Officials say the incident began when the Valparaiso Police Department received a call about three males allegedly attempting to break into cars around 2 p.m. today. Police saw a vehicle that matched that description and tried to make a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled and entered the Toll Road at mile marker 31. It eventually crashed near the 27.8 mile marker, according to the ISP release.

The three suspects fled on foot but two were apprehended north of the Toll Road and taken into custody.

The third suspect, meanwhile, was seen running by an ITRCC maintenance worker who was directing traffic. He tried to take control of the unoccupied maintenance truck and backed it up, crashing into a semi-truck in the process. Police say he drove back toward the maintenance worker and officers pursuing him on foot.

Shots were fired by a Porter County Sheriff’s Deputy and two Indiana State Troopers. The release says the suspect then put the truck into drive and crashed into another semi.

He was taken into custody after fleeing on foot and being caught on CR 200 West, below the Toll Road. Police say he suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Traffic was stopped in both directions for several hours.

The case remains under investigation.
