NORTH JUDSON 3, TRITON 2
Triton suffered its first Hoosier North Athletic Conference loss of the season with a close, 3-2 defeat to veteran North Judson-San Pierre.
Hayden Kaminski trumped Connor Large in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, at 2 singles, and Payton Cox and Kayden Grinder rallied back from a first-set loss to Cole McKinney and Chandler Westafer, for a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win at 2 doubles to lift the Bluejays to the win.
Jared Bules and Tyler Heckaman won a three-setter at 1 doubles for Triton opposite Kyle Burkett and Andrew Attinger, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4, and John Gardner won his 1 singles match with Gavin Alonso, 6-1, 6-3. Gavin Greer fell 6-2, 6-0 to Caleb Shireman at 3 singles as the Trojans slipped to 1-2 overall and an even 1-1 in the HNAC.
Triton’s JV also lost all three of its matches Tuesday.
WAWASEE 5, CENTRAL NOBLE 0
Wawasee tennis earned a clean sweep of Central Noble on the road Tuesday evening.
The Warriors benefitted from forfeits at both 3 singles and 2 doubles and surrendered only three total games on the remaining three courts. Holden Babb put away Austin Frey 6-0, 6-0, at 2 singles, Grant Brook and Jack Gibbons collected a 6-0, 6-1 win over Aiden Miller and Owen Darland at 1 doubles, and Zach Leedy topped Austin Smith, 6-1, 6-1, at 1 singles.
Wawasee improves to 2-1. The Warriors will play at West Noble Thursday night.
GRACE MEN 7, BETHEL 0
The Lancers started their season off in dominate fashion, sweeping Crossroads League-rival Bethel Tuesday.
Starting the day with doubles action was freshmen Mauricio Corty, who, along with Max Rozas, picked up his first collegiate win in the No. 2 doubles slot with a 6-2 victory over the Bethel squad.
Pavle Popovic set the tone for the Lancers, teaming up with Milan Savic in the No. 1 doubles spot to take a 6-2 match victory before transitioning to No. 1 singles action, where he swept both his sets, 6-0.
Kye Barrett also won both his matches, teaming with Jacob Gray to take a 6-1 doubles victory, and in the No. 6 singles slot sweeping his opponent 6-2 and 6-1.
Also, seeing his first action as a Lancer was freshman Ramiro Candia. Candia was placed in the No. 3 singles spot and won in straight sets.
The Lancers will host the University of Northwestern Ohio at the Miller Athletic Complex on Thursday at 2 p.m.
GRACE WOMEN 7, BETHEL 0
Like their men’s counterparts, Grace’s women opened the season with a statement sweep of Bethel on Tuesday.
Emily Mast and Dayana Ortega shut out their opponents at No. 1 doubles, and Carrie Copeland and Jayna Armstrong also won 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.
Morgan Mast and Gretchen Adams closed out the doubles with a 6-3 win.
The Lady Lancers also won at every singles position. Emily Mast and Copeland set the tone with two 6-2, 6-2 wins — Mast at No. 1 singles and Copeland at No. 2.
At No. 3 singles, Ortega secured the victory while surviving the closest game of the match (6-0, 7-5).
Morgan Mast was perfect at No. 5 singles, Armstrong won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, and Shelby Bankson rounded out the scoring with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 6 singles.
The Lady Lancers continue the season at Valparaiso on Thursday.
