Lancers Narrowly Miss Upset
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Grace’s men’s soccer team battled No. 25 Southeastern on Wednesday, nearly pulling off the upset.
The Lancers (1-1-1) endured two overtimes to earn the 1-1 draw. With the clock winding down in the second overtime period, Grace’s potential game winner found the back of the net mere seconds after the final buzzer.
The Fire (2-0-1) got off to a quick start, netting a goal just two minutes into the game.
Marcelo Talamas scored the equalizer at the 10:21 mark on an assist from Cody Boerema.
The Lancers’ defense held firm, while the offense continued to attack. Grace had 11 shot attempts in the game with six being on goal.
In the two overtime periods, Gonzalo Salo made two saves for the Lancers, and the defense survived two corner kicks from the Fire in the final period.
Gonzalo Salo played all 110 minutes in goal for the Lancers, making five saves while allowing only one goal.
Talamas led Grace with three shots and two on goal, and Togo Narusawa added two more.
The Lancers are back in action on Friday. They will take on Columbia International at 7 p.m.
