Rain Shortens WACF’s Bug Catch
SYRACUSE — It started out cloudy Saturday morning, July 6, for the start of the annual Wawasee Area Conservancy Foundation’s Bug Catch, but it didn’t keep over 100 youngsters and adults from gathering at the Ruddell Pavilion.
After a brief informational time, explaining what the kids would be searching for and the meaning of these “critters” to the water quality, the group started toward the shore of Lake Wawasee with a light rain.
But it wasn’t long after the youngsters and adults entered the water to begin their search for benthic macroinvertebrate better known as critters, before the rain became heavier and a storm rolled in causing everyone to get out of the lake. There was an opportunity before the event ended to see some of the critters found earlier in the morning displayed in tubs of lake water, including several different kinds of baby turtles and a small crayfish.
