SR 15 Improvements On North Side Of Warsaw Set To Begin Monday
FORT WAYNE — A rehabilitation project is slated to begin Monday on a stretch of SR 15 that crosses through the northern half of Warsaw.
The concrete replacement project will stretch from just south of US 30 to just north of Market Street in downtown Warsaw. Officials are not sure which end of the stretch will be addressed first.
The project is expected to be completed by mid-November, weather permitting, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Transportation.
The work is one of 150 such projects carried out in 17 Indiana counties by the Indiana Department of Transportation’s Fort Wayne District.
The work along the highway in Warsaw will not include closing the road, but will require lane restrictions.
“It will involve tearing out the concrete slab and re-pouring new concrete,” said Nichole Hacha-Thomas, media relations director for INDOT’s Fort Wayne District. She said patches of concrete will be replaced as needed and said the project will not involve replacing all the concrete in the stretch of road.
Recently completed pavement work on SR 15 in southern Elkhart County included a rumble strip along the center line. That’s not happening along the proposed work in Warsaw.
“We don’t usually add rumble strips in the city proper because there is a noise component to those and we would rather not have people in the city having to deal with that,” she said.
According to a press release from INDOT, the Warsaw project will feature upgrades to curb ramps to bring them in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Curb ramp upgrades will take place at several intersections between Canal and Arthur streets, INDOT said.
Construction of the new curb ramps may include widening a portion of the sidewalk; installing the ramps; and lowering the approach to align the ramps with the road. Pedestrian detours will be provided throughout the work.
During the day, drivers are cautioned to watch for lane closures, stopped traffic or trucks entering or exiting the construction zone. INDOT reminds drivers to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through active work zones.
The contract was awarded to INDOT contractor E&B Paving for $2.7 million and includes the resurfacing of SR 14 in southern Kosciusko County.
“That work (on SR 14) has already taken place and covered the stretch from SR 15 to SR 13,” said Hacha-Thomas.
Hacha-Thomas added that later this year, another project with the potential to create traffic situations will occur near where the current project will begin.
“We will actually be doing a repair of a drainage structure over the Hickman Ditch at the intersection of US 30 and SR 15 in early August,” she said. “It will cause some lane restrictions. The project will include a pipe liner installation were the structure will be re-lined.”
