Mentone Man Sentenced For Burglarizing Garage, Stealing Items From Vehicles
KOSCIUSKO — A Mentone man was sentenced to seven years at the Indiana Department of Corrections on Monday, June 24, after stealing items from several vehicles and burglarizing a garage.
Aaron J. Guyberson, 32, 305 N. Tucker St., Mentone, was charged with burglary and possession of methamphetamine, both level 5 felonies; and fraud, theft of a firearm, and two counts of theft, all level 6 felonies. Five other counts of theft were dismissed.
On Dec. 15, 2018, an officer with the Mentone Police Department responded to a report of a theft from a vehicle. A male subject said a wallet containing a credit card and $400 in cash had been stolen from his vehicle. The credit card was used at Wilby’s in Mentone for $67.17 and at the Warsaw Walmart for $518.42.
Later that day, the officer received a second report of a theft from a vehicle. According to the affidavit of probable cause, a female subject said a laptop computer, valued at $300, had been stolen. The officer also received another theft from a vehicle call. A male subject said an Apple watch and a handgun, both valued for $900, were stolen from his vehicle.
On Dec. 17, 2018, officers with the Mentone Police Department responded to a report of a burglary. A female subject said an unknown individual entered her garage and stole a weed-eater, leaf blower and a generator, all valued at $750. The garage’s door jamb was broken and had been forced open.
On Dec. 19, 2018, the male subject whose Apple watch was stolen informed officers that the watch had been turned on and gave its location. Officers went to the location and found a male subject, identified as Guyberson.
According to the affidavit of probable cause, Guyberson admitted to entering several vehicles and stealing items. He also admitted to entering a garage and stealing items. While arresting Guyberson, officers searched his person and discovered a plastic bag containing 7.2 grams of methamphetamine.
“I’m very remorseful of my actions and I want help while I’m in DOC (Department of Corrections),” said Guyberson.
For the burglary charge, Kosciusko County Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed sentenced Guyberson to three years at the Department of Corrections. He was also sentenced to two years at DOC for possession of methamphetamine, and one year in the DOC for each remaining charge. The sentences for fraud and theft of a firearm, as well as both charges of theft, will each be served concurrently. All of the sentences will be served consecutively. Guyberson has 370 days of jail time credit.
