INDIANAPOLIS – Luke Griner has one more to go.
The Army-bound runner from Wawasee was chosen to compete in one more high school race, selected for the 800-meter dash at the Midwest Meet of Champions.
The Indiana All-Star, who placed fourth in an air tight finish at the IHSAA State Finals last weekend in Bloomington, was picked with Carson Bakker of Covenant Christian and Joe Peterson of West Lafayette to represent Indiana. Bakker was fifth and Peterson 11th at the State Finals. Griner ran a school-record 1:52.89 at the State Finals, finishing just a second-and-a-half behind Indianapolis Cathedral champion Cole Hocker’s 1:51.48.
A handful of others from the area were chosen for the meet, which will take place at Michigan State University this weekend, June 7-8, the banquet on Friday and actual racing and field events on Saturday starting at 11 a.m. The meet features stars from Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. The athletes compete for their state, not their school.
Mishawaka’s Shane Glasco, third-place finisher in the high jump at last week’s high school boys state track finals, is one of three other area athletes named to the Indiana All-Star track team. Desmond Wilkins-Maxwell of Elkhart Christian Academy and New Prairie’s Jacob Corbett were also named to the Hoosier boys squad.
Glasco cleared a Mishawaka school record 6 feet, 9 inches to finish third at last week’s IHSAA finals. Wilkins-Maxwell, whose best this season was 23 feet, 8 inches, finished ninth at the state finals. Corbett finished 10th in the 3200-meter run, recording a New Prairie school record 9:20.14.
No area girls were selected for the Indiana All-Star girls squad.
