Friends of the Warsaw Community Public Library

Friends of the Library
A few years ago, being retired, I was looking for something enjoyable to do to fill my day. I wandered into the Warsaw Community Public Library and it has become my favorite hangout. Finding great books to read and attending a class or program are right up my alley, but joining Friends of the Library really tops it off for me! For those of you unfamiliar with the group, let me give you some background.
Friends of the Library is national — libraries all over the U.S. have established these groups. Why, you ask? Because support is vital to a library. FOL answers that need through a group of people whose mission is raising money and public awareness in the community to support the services and programs of the library.
In October 2015, WCPL Director Ann Zydek and Administrative Assistant Robin Fosnaugh, held a meeting to see if there was interest for starting a FOL. As a result of their efforts, Friends of the Warsaw Community Public Library Inc. was established in 2016. Incorporation, tax exemption, non-profit status was achieved by the end of that year. FOL took over the library book sales in 2017. Its success has enabled the group to purchase numerous items on the library’s Wish List. When members are not busy with book sales, they are always eager to be where needed in the library. WCPL’s 100th birthday and Santa Day are two of the 2018 events members enjoyed being involved in. When the library calls, Friends are there offering support.
Feb. 4 was the annual meeting and beginning of FOL’s fourth year. A seven-member board was elected and an Advisory Council was established. Meetings are the first Monday of the month, 1 p.m., meeting room A/B. Those wanting to help support WCPL (but feel their schedules are already hectic) will be happy to hear membership in the Warsaw FOL has options — all members pay yearly dues which keeps the organization running smoothly, but attending monthly meetings and being on the volunteer contact list is optional.
I definitely recommend wandering into the Warsaw library, as it may become your favorite place to hang out too. Jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts — check out the FOL Puzzle Place, second floor near the reference desk. While you are there, grab a FOL membership brochure so you can join the team!
