Lake City Lions Club Of Warsaw To Host White Cane Day Event
WARSAW — The Lake City Lions Club of Warsaw will be having a White Cane Day Saturday, June 1. The club will hand out mints and information from 9 a.m. to noon at Owen’s Supermarket on Center Street.
The purpose of White Cane Day is to educate people about blindness and honor the contributions made by people who are blind or visually impaired.
The development of the white cane in the U.S. is attributed to the Lions Club International. In 1930, a Lions Club member observed a blind man attempting to make his way across a busy street with a black cane. The member realized the black cane was barely visible to motorists and decided to paint the cane white. In December of that year, a law in Peoria, Ill. granted pedestrian protections and the right of way for those carrying a white cane. The next year, 1931, Lions Club International launched a national program promoting white cane awareness.
