CULVER — Warsaw tennis was hoping for a reprisal of conference-rival Plymouth after an earlier, 4-1 loss at Wednesday’s Culver Academies Regional final. What the Lady Tigers got was more of the same.
The Lady Pilgrims won everywhere but at 1 doubles on the way to a 4-1 defeat of Northern Lakes Conference-rival Warsaw and a repeat regional championship in Culver.
Kyla Heckaman defeated Alyssa Zellers, 7-5, 6-3 at 1 singles, Miranda German topped Taylor Shoaf, 6-0, 6-1, at 2 singles less than 24 hours after Shoaf’s marathon four-hour match in the semifinals, and Aubrey Vervyncht put away Rachel Boyle, 6-1, 6-2 to complete the singles sweep.
Amy Herendeen and Maddie Ray split with Olive Stanton and Sydni Weir but ultimately fell, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5, at 2 doubles. Raegan Merchant and Rachel Yeager gave Warsaw its only win at 1 doubles via 6-2, 6-3 defeat of Audie Plothow and Mary Beatty but are ineligible to move on in the IHSAA’s doubles tournament after a straight-set loss to CGA’s Ava Kite and Margaret Davidson in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Plymouth advances to play the Highland Regional-winner in the top bracket of the CGA Semistate, while the LaPorte and Kokomo regional-winners square off in the other championship bracket Saturday.
The Tigers will lose five of their top seven — Boyle, Merchant, Yeager, Ray and Herendeen — at the close of their 19th-straight sectional championship season.
