ELKHART MEMORIAL 2, NORTHWOOD 1
The Panthers’ pitching kept them in it, but Memorial swept the series with another late rally at home in Elkhart Friday night.
The Chargers plated two runs for the walk-off, echoing a similar, 5-4 defeat over NorthWood in the first game of their home-and-home series on April 24, when they plated three runs in the top of the seventh en route to the Northern Lakes Conference win.
Alec Holcomb went the distance and gave up just three hits and four walks, striking out 10 but still taking the hard-luck loss. Dylan Rost finished 2-for-3 with a run to lead Memorial at the plate, while Cannon Harris finished with a hit and an RBI. Landon Lee got the pitching win, surrendering just two hits and three walks with four strikeouts in a gem for the Chargers.
Matt Dutkowski and Kyler Hauptli recorded NorthWood’s only hits, and Josh Stratford scored the only run for the Panthers, who drop to 14-6 overall and 8-4 in the NLC.
Memorial moves to 9-10 overall and an even 6-6 in the NLC.
NorthWood plays Plymouth Monday at 5 p.m.
PLYMOUTH 11, WAWASEE 2
The Warriors took one on the chin in an 11-2 loss to visiting Plymouth Friday night.
The Pilgrims collected 15 hits to just five by Wawasee in the win.
Kameron Salazar got the loss, giving up four earned runs off of eight hits with four walks and four strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings pitched. Jacob Krugman relieved him in the sixth, surrendering another four hits for another four earned runs, and Josh Slabaugh closed it out, surrendering three hits for another two earned runs in the seventh.
Matt Dobuck homered on his way to a two-hit, two-run night for Plymouth, while Cole Filson doubled twice as part of a 4-for-5, three-RBI plate performance for the Pilgrims. Jesus Luva surrendered five hits with one walk and three strikeouts for one earned run going the distance on the hill for Plymouth, which improves to 13-6 and 8-3 in NLC play.
Ethan Garza doubled and scored a run for Wawasee, while Parker Young, Levi Brown and Tony Garcia also all recorded hits for the Warriors.
Wawasee slides to 10-9 overall and 5-7 in NLC play. They play West Noble Saturday.
Wawasee’s JV did earn a win over its Plymouth counterparts via a narrow 4-3 victory Saturday.
Charlie Doss finished 2-for-3 with an RBI, and Gavin Wilson doubled with a walk and an RBI for the JV Warriors. Jacob Meek pitched six innings, giving up three runs — only one earned — while fanning five. Lucas Ringler closed it out, tallying a strikeout during a shutout seventh.
NORTHRIDGE 6, WARSAW 5
The Warsaw Tigers watched the game slip away early and couldn’t recover in a close loss to NLC-leading Northridge on Friday.
The Raiders would take a 3-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third, before the Tigers got their offense rolling with two runs to cut the deficit to 3-2. Northridge would add three more runs over the sixth and seventh to make the game 6-2, but the Tigers did not go down without a fight. Warsaw scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth taking the Raider lead down to 6-4 and then would tack on another in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be all the offense Warsaw would get.
Drake Graham took the loss for the Tigers. He lasted 3 2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three runs while striking out two. Warsaw saw the ball well, racking up nine hits in the game. Matt Shoemaker led the way, going 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Josh Ehrlinger went 2-for-2, Noah Burgh added a double and an RBI, and Ian Glogovsky added an RBI single. Aric Krallman, Liam Patton, and Jacob Hutcherson also had a hit for the Tigers, who dipped to 7-13 and 4-7 in the conference. Warsaw is in action again Saturday against Carroll.
Warsaw’s JV also lost to Ridge, 4-1, Friday.
The JV Tigers out-hit the Raiders 10-7 but couldn’t find a way to get runners in in the loss.
Northridge got things started in the first inning when Vermilyer induced Jamon Christner to hit into a fielder’s choice, but one run scored.
Jesse Ryman got the start for Northridge. He went four innings, allowing zero runs on six hits, striking out two and walking zero.
Daylan Vermilyer went 6 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on seven hits and striking out five. Gabe Bowers threw 1/3 of an inning in relief out of the bullpen.
Patrick Zollinger, Tyler Kuhn and Drew Yeager all collected multiple hits for Warsaw’s JV, led by Zollinger’s 3-for-4, two-double performance.
