WAWASEE 5, ELKHART MEMORIAL 0
Wawasee bounced back from a loss at Warsaw with a conference win on the road at Elkhart Memorial Friday night.
Carter Woody and Jacob Krugman combined for the shutout, and the Warriors plated three runs in the third on the way to the win, which moved them to an even 4-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Woody lasted six innings, giving up just three hits and one walk with seven strikeouts, and Krugman closed it out with a perfect seventh, striking out two of three batters.
Kameron Salazar went 2-for-3 with a double, Ethan Garza drove in a run and scored another, and Austin Baker scored two runs for the Warriors.
Cole Beadle went 2-for-2 at the plate for Memorial. Drew Pressler took the pitching loss, giving up four hits and five walks with five strikeouts for four runs, three earned.
Wawasee improved to 9-6 overall. The Warriors play at NorthWood Monday at 5 p.m.
Wawasee’s JV lost its game with Memorial by a narrow, 8-7 mark Friday.
Charlie Doss went 3-for-3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs to lead the JV Warriors (8-4) at the plate. Nate Bess was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI.
NORTHWOOD 2, NORTHRIDGE 1
NorthWood baseball won its second straight Northern Lakes Conference pitchers duel, 2-1, over the host Raiders Friday night.
The win echoed a similar, 2-1 victory over Concord Wednesday night and represented the Panthers’ third straight overall and second straight in the NLC.
Wood batters collected just three hits but Alec Holcomb surrendered only four hits and one walk over seven innings. He struck out six on the way to the win, giving up Ridge’s only run on a Nick Logan homer in the fourth.
Wood scored runs in the third and fifth innings, meanwhile. Sergia Lira Ayala scored both of the Panthers’ two runs. Kyle Sellers finished with an RBI, and Kyler Hauptli, Jack Wysong and Holcomb tallied their team’s only hits.
Davis Enfield took the tough-luck loss for Northridge, giving up just three hits and one walk with eight strikeouts for two earned runs in six innings of work.
Ridge dips to 8-7 and 5-2 in the NLC as Wood swept the series Friday. NorthWood improved to 11-4 overall with a 6-2 conference mark. The Panthers play at East Noble Saturday at 11 a.m.
GOSHEN 7, WARSAW 6
The Warsaw Tigers fought hard but couldn’t battle all the way back form a five-run third by host Goshen Friday night.
The Tigers started off strong, scoring two runs in the first and one each in the second and third. They were ahead 4-1 before the RedHawks’ big fifth. Goshen would also add a run in the fourth to make the margin 7-4.
Warsaw would answer with a run in the fifth inning courtesy of a solo home run from Ian Glogovsky and then would plate another run in the seventh with Noah Burgh scoring from a fielder’s choice ground ball from Liam Patton.
The Tigers collected seven hits with Jacob Hutcherson and Burgh leading the way with two each.
Skylar Reyes was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, and Colin Turner went 2-for-2 with two RBIs to lead Goshen at the plate.
Austin Cain got the win. He surrendered six runs on six hits over six innings, striking out five. Reece Fisher got the save for the Hawks coming in during the seventh.
The RedHawks improved to 7-10 and 4-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference.
Warsaw slips to 5-11 and 2-6 in NLC action.
Warsaw’s junior varsity defeated Goshen 7-5 in their game Friday. The game was tied at five in the top of the sixth when an error scored one run for the JV Tigers.
Warsaw got things moving in the second inning when Patrick Zollinger drew a walk, scoring one run.
Drew Yeager lasted three innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out two in the pitching win for the Warsaw JV. Drew McCleary went 2-for-4 at the plate.
Warsaw baseball will go back to work Saturday morning with a home game opposite Elkhart Memorial. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
MANCHESTER 3, TIPPECANOE VALLEY 0
Mason Roberts threw a four-hit shutout, and Manchester stayed unbeaten in Three Rivers Conference play by handing Tippecanoe Valley its first TRC loss Thursday.
Tanner Trippiedi pitched six innings, allowing six hits with six strikeouts and three runs to take the loss. Valley was led at the plate by Russ Paxton with two hits, and Layne Prater and Ethan Yates each added one hit.
Devin Marcum went 2-for-3 with two RBIs for Manchester.
The Squires improved to 10-2 with a 4-0 conference record. Valley slid to 7-4 and 3-1 in the TRC.
GRACE 5, HUNTINGTON 1
Grace’s baseball team shook up the Crossroads League Tournament on Friday, beating No. 1 seed Huntington 5-4 in walkoff fashion.
The Lancers (15-25), seeded eighth in the tournament, won the game in the 10th inning. With the bases loaded, freshman Jacob Sapp laid down a perfect squeeze bunt to allow Branden Scott to slide home for the winning run.
Grace will continue in the double-elimination tournament on Saturday at 4 p.m. against either Indiana Wesleyan or Taylor.
Houston Haney starred on the mound for the Lancers. He pitched the first seven innings, allowing three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Grace shocked the Foresters (26-13) early on in the contest. The Lancers started the game with three straight hits and scored twice.
David Anderson singled as the leadoff hitter, and Sam Newkirk doubled. Xavier Harris then stepped up and produced a double to right-center, bringing in both runners. Not long after, Mitchell Enyart’s single scored Harris for a 3-0 run.
Huntington responded calmly and tied the game by the end of the third inning.
The 3-3 scoreline stood until the seventh inning when Huntington scored with two outs. But Grace countered in the bottom of the eighth thanks to a two-out, solo home run by Haney.
Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game to extra innings. Jacob Hammel, who came in to pitch in the ninth inning, shut down the Foresters again in the 10th inning.
Chris Griffin started the bottom of the 10th with a walk, and Scott entered to run for him. Enyart reached base safely, and Beach Harmon successfully moved both runners into scoring position with a bunt.
Haney was walked intentionally to load the bases, setting up the winning moment.
A few pitches into the next at-bat, Sapp surprised Huntington’s defense with a squeeze bunt. Sapp’s bunt landed between the pitcher and catcher and didn’t allow for a throw at the plate.
Anderson batted 3-for-4 with with a run, Sapp was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Enyart went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Jordan Noska pitched a perfect eighth inning, and Hammel earned the win by throwing a scoreless final two innings.
