Chimp’s Comix Celebrates Fifteen Years Of Hosting Free Comic Book Day Event
WARSAW — Fans of 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame,” “Captain Marvel” and “Shazam!” can celebrate these and numerous other comic book series through Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 4.
From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. this Saturday, anyone can show up to Chimp’s Comix, 919 E. Winona Ave., Warsaw, to receive two free comic books. However, there is a certain selection of books specifically made for the event that are free. Not all comics in the storefront are part of the free selection.
Nick Kelley, owner of Chimp’s Comix, said this is the 15th year a Free Comic Book Day event has been held at the store. Free Comic Book Day is a national event that first began in 2002.
Chimp’s Comix is also giving back to the community by partnering with The Salvation Army. Free Comic Book Day attendees can bring non-perishable food items to the store and receive one additional free comic per each item donated.
“Last year, we received about 1,650 food items,” said Kelley. “We’re hoping to get that over 2,000 this year.”
Even if one is unfamiliar with titles published by Marvel or DC, Free Comic Book Day also offers comics for other series, including “Star Wars,” “Pokémon,” “Minecraft,” “Stranger Things” and “Doctor Who.”
In total, there will be more than 120 free comic book choices for attendees to choose from this year. There are 54 new comics in the 2019 lineup, and the store also has comics from previous Free Comic Book Day events available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
“I always enjoy meeting new people through this event,” said Kelley. “It’s also absolutely amazing to help give back to the community through donations to Salvation Army. There is always a huge line right at the beginning of the event, so make sure you definitely get here early if you want specific comics from the list.”
