WARSAW 13, FORT WAYNE SNIDER 3
WARSAW 14, FORT WAYNE SNIDER 4
Warsaw nearly doubled its run total from its first three games in a game one win against Snider, then backed it up with another win in game two Saturday in a doubleheader in Warsaw.
Avery Sleeth hit her first career homer in game one, part of a two-hit, three RBI game. Her two-run homer gave Warsaw a 10-2 lead, part of a five-run third. A seven-run second inning was the team’s biggest frame of the season to that point, helped by a pair of Snider errors and RBI singles from Sleeth and Izzy Dittmar.
Dittmar and Lindsey Bradley added three hits apiece and three combined runs scored.
Courtney Chookie gave up three hits in three innings of work to get the game one win.
In game two, Warsaw raised the stakes by scoring eight runs in the fourth to pull away from Snider. Leading 6-3, Sleeth cranked her second homer of the day to dead center, a two-run shot, and Hailey Locke and Carmen Albertson added RBI hits. Sleeth added another RBI single later in the frame.
Albertson and Sleeth both drove in four for the Tigers in game two, and Madison Lane added a hit, two walks and two runs scored and driven in.
Chookie added another win, working four innings of four-hit ball with three strikeouts. Kennedy Tennant added three innings of relief in the two games.
“We spent about an hour and a half in the cage working on some things, and it showed, but so did our defense,” said Warsaw head coach Kevin Dishman. “We are taking a three-second rule now in the box. Too many times early on this year the girls have been upset about something during an at-bat, a pitch or a swing, and they continue to worry about it instead of stepping out, catching their breath and getting back in and taking a better approach. In the case of Avery and Hailey, I could see that help them, and Avery really crushed the ball today.”
Warsaw had their home opener in the JV ranks Saturday, scoring 16 runs in a win. Torri Tackett had four hits and also struck out 12 Panthers to showcase the win.
Warsaw (2-3) will begin Northern Lakes Conference play Monday against Wawasee.
NORTHWOOD 8, ELKHART CENTRAL 0
Madi Miller had another good outing in the circle, throwing a three-hit shutout at home against the Blazers.
Miller allowed just three singles and walked four while striking out nine.
Gracie Clark was 3-for-3 with a walk and a run scored and Brooklyn Troyer also reached base four times – two hits and two walks – and drove in two.
NorthWood (4-4) heads into NLC play Monday against Concord.
WAWASEE 13, TRITON 0
Wawasee scored two runs in each of the second and third innings, then dropped a nine spot in the fourth to put the Trojans away.
Erin Ogle gave up 10 hits for Triton in the game played in Syracuse, allowing seven earned runs. Triton managed just three hits in the game.
Full stats for Wawasee were not provided.
Wawasee (4-4) heads into NLC play Monday at Warsaw, Triton (3-5) also play Monday at Knox in Hoosier North Athletic Conference play.
MARIAN 9, GRACE 1
MARIAN 10, GRACE 2
Grace could not keep pace with No. 3 Marian’s high-powered softball team on Saturday, losing 9-1 and 10-2.
The Lady Lancers managed to score in the first inning of each game, but Grace was unable to maintain its offense throughout both ballgames.
Both teams were poised for big starts to the opener. Marian had three hits in the first inning, but Sam Heim held Marian to just one run from the mound.
Grace responded immediately. Heim hit a leadoff single and stole second base. She came home to score with two outs after a double by Britney Young tied the game.
The Lady Lancers (9-27, 5-19 Crossroads League) could have scored more with the bases loaded, but Marian escaped with a strikeout.
The Knights (38-0, 26-0 CL) had baserunners in almost every inning and eventually pulled ahead 4-1 after four innings. Marian was able to tack on five more runs over the final two innings, and Grace came up empty in response.
The Lady Lancers did place two runners on base in the seventh thanks to singles from Taylor Asher and Heim, but the game ended with a ground out.
Heim batted 2 for 3 with a run scored, and she also pitched the first 5 1/3 innings from the mound.
Grace could not slow down Marian’s offense in the second game and rarely threatened. The Knights held a 17-5 advantage in hits, although all but three of those hits were singles.
Marian scored two runs in the first, second, third, fifth and seventh innings.
The Lady Lancers again scored a run in the bottom of the first. Jessica Kaurich hit a two-out RBI single to plate Jess Vandenboom.
Grace’s only other run came in the fourth after Heim singled to bring in Andrea Castillo.
Olivia Scarbrough was 2 for 3 with a sacrifice hit, and Castillo added 1 hit, 1 run and 1 walk.
The Lady Lancers remain at home on Tuesday, hosting Taylor for a 3 p.m. doubleheader.
