Donations Approved To Camp Mollenhour, Fire Department Fundraiser At Silver Lake Town Council Meeting
SILVER LAKE — Representatives of Camp Mollenhour attended the Silver Lake town council meeting held Wednesday, April 10, to provide details about the camp, including information about a fundraiser.
Kevin Lockwood, caretaker at Camp Mollenhour, and Indiana Conservation Officer Jordan Boggs, a camp volunteer, told council members that the camp, located at McClures Lake, just west of Silver Lake, features activities such as fishing, boating, swimming and hunting. The camp also offers firearm and archery safety and skills training and hunter and boater education certification.
“My paycheck is when I watch a kid dust his first clay pigeon and he turns around and his smile — or her smile in many cases — is ear to ear, eyes are huge,” said Boggs. “It’s a very rewarding experience to be able to pass on what we know to the next generation.”
“The camp is directed toward keeping kids safe, teaching them the right way to do things, keeping them ethical and responsible,” Boggs stated.
According to Boggs, in 2018 the boys’ camp was full and they actually had a waiting list. There were 64 girls in last year’s camp.
“The kids who come there are continually coming back,” said Boggs. “It’s not just a one and done.”
Lockwood told council members that the camp was selected by Kosciusko Community Foundation for an endowment matching grant. The camp dining hall is showing signs of age and needs to be modernized, Lockwood explained, and they would also like to expand the camp in order to be able to accommodate more participants.
“We need to raise $10,000 and they will match it, four to one,” said Lockwood.
The goal must be met by June.
“We don’t want to have that waiting list and we don’t want to tell a kid ‘no’,” Lockwood said.
The camp is for participants between the ages of 9-14. The 2019 boys’ camp will be held from July 14-19. The 2019 girls’ camp will be held July 21-26.
Silver Lake council members approved a $500 donation to the Camp Mollenhour endowment challenge. Anyone who is interested in learning more about the camp or the fundraiser can find information on the website.
