Twin Ariz. Boys Killed By Grandmother
TUCSON, ARIZ. — An Arizona grandmother is accused of fatally shooting her twin 8-year-old grandsons before trying to kill herself with an apparent overdose, say police.
Dorothy Flood, 55, of Tucson, was arrested Friday, a day after her grandchildren, Jordon and Jaden Webb, were found dead of gunshot wounds in her home, the Pima County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.
Flood was charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
She was the twin brothers’ sole guardian.
She became their caretaker after their mother died by suicide, according to Chandra McCord, Flood’s former co-worker at the University Medical Center in Tucson, reports KOLD-TV.
“Somewhere, something snapped,” McCord told the station. “My first reaction was of course no, it could not be the same Dorothy we knew.”
On Thursday at about 2 p.m., the fire department responded to a 911 call for medical assistance at Flood’s home, the sheriff’s office said in the release.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered an unresponsive adult female inside the residence with symptoms of an “apparent overdose,” the statement says.
While tending to her, they discovered the two slain children in separate bedrooms.
As one of Flood’s co-workers for several years, McCord recalls her as being proud of her grandsons, putting up pictures of them at work, KOLD-TV reports.
“She loved those grandkids and she loved her family,” McCord said, adding that she quit her job so she could care for them full-time.
“You could see the fear that she had of the future.” said McCord. “She was afraid she wasn’t going to be able to handle it.”
One neighbor told local station WDSU that both boys had special needs.
“They were good kids,” the neighbor, who wished to remain anonymous, told the station. “They didn’t talk, but they were good kids.”
Flood is being held at the Pima County Adult Detention Complex without bond. She has not yet entered a plea. It is unclear if she has retained a lawyer who can speak on her behalf.
