Atwood Man Arrested After Police Pursuit Involving Stolen Handgun
KOSCIUSKO — An Atwood man was recently arrested after police say he threw a stolen handgun out of his vehicle while involved in a police pursuit.
Anthony Wayne Miller, 37, 111 E. High St., Atwood, is being charged with resisting law enforcement, a level 6 felony; obstruction of justice, a level 6 felony; theft, a level 6 felony; driving while suspended, a class A misdemeanor; carrying a handgun without a license, a class A misdemeanor; and carrying a handgun without a license, a level 5 felony.
On April 5, an officer with the Claypool Police Department observed a passenger vehicle traveling faster than the posted speed limit on SR 15, in the area of Union Street. The office conducted a traffic stop but the vehicle accelerated and fled from the officer. According to the affidavit of probable cause, the vehicle reached speeds of 116 mph before coming to a stop on CR 525S.
Once the vehicle was stopped, the officer was able to identify the driver as Miller. Miller was arrested for resisting law enforcement and a search of his person was conducted. The officer located $442 and numerous small, clear baggies in Miller’s possession. An empty black gun holster was also located on the vehicle’s floorboard. It was also discovered that Miller’s driver’s license was suspended prior.
Officers then began searching for a handgun that was believed to have been thrown from the vehicle during the pursuit. Dash camera footage showed a black object being tossed from the vehicle. Officers returned to the location shown in the dash camera footage and located a handgun and a loaded magazine in the field. The located handgun had been reported stolen from a vehicle on March 15.
Miller has a long criminal history in Kosciusko County. He was convicted of domestic battery in 2017; strangulation and battery with moderate bodily injury in 2016; and domestic battery, also in 2016. Miller also has two active pending criminal cases for dealing in methamphetamine.
Miller was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on April 5, with a $10,250 surety and cash bond.
