Grace Wins Slugfest At St. Francis
FORT WAYNE – Friday’s game between Grace’s baseball team and St. Francis included 30 runs, 35 hits and 7 extra-base hits.
When a wild nine innings had concluded, the Lancers claimed a victory by the score of 17-13.
The win moves Grace into a four-way tie for fourth place in the Crossroads League standings.
The scoring started early and never let up. Grace led 8-7 after three innings were complete.
Three innings later, Grace remained in front, but the score had grown to 12-11.
The Lancers (10-14, 6-7 CL) picked up a big boost in the top of the seventh with four runs. Houston Haney had a two-out, two-run single to highlight the inning.
The Cougars were silenced in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings, and USF was unable to make a significant dent in Grace’s cushion in the ninth inning.
Haney drove in four runs and batted 2 for 4, and Chris Griffin hit 4 of 5 with two runs scored.
Mitchell Enyart finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs and a run, David Anderson was 3 for 6 with three RBIs.
Jacob Sapp hit 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Hunter Ackerman scored three times and had two hits, and Xavier Harris plated twice.
The Cougars (12-23, 6-7 CL) burned through eight pitchers in the game trying to slow Grace’s offense. Grace, on the other hand, had Josh Tew as the starter to go along with three relievers. Ethan Brooks was the most effective reliever by allowing no runs and two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Lancers will conclude the series with USF on Saturday starting at 1 p.m.
