Reconstruction Of Commerce Drive In Warsaw Is Under Way
WARSAW — Reconstruction of the eastern end of Commerce Drive has begun.
The short stretch of road runs parallel along US 30 from McDonald’s to a Marathon gas station to the west and serves as an access road to Big R, Staples and a half dozen other stores in Woodland Plaza in Warsaw.
The road is privately maintained and has been in disrepair for years, to the point motorists travel slowly and often drive around some of the biggest potholes.
Phend & Brown of Milford began work earlier this week. A spokesperson said construction is expected to take several weeks, but access to the stores will remain open. Work will include new curbs, gutter and pavement, according to the company.
City officials have said if the road is built to city specifications, the board of works would consider providing road maintenance in the future.
Warsaw Mayor Joe Thallemer expressed optimism that a longstanding problem could soon be resolved.
Officials will watch the construction process to ensure improvements meet city standards, he said.
“It’s been a multi-year process to get them going and the fact they’re out there doing something is important,” Thallemer said. “I have no doubt the city will take that road over if our street superintendent gives us the green light.”
