James Alden Smith
James “Jim” Alden Smith, 82, passed away unexpectantly on Sunday, March 31, 2019, in Warsaw. He was born on Nov. 6, 1936, in Marshall County, to Gilbert and Roma (Pyle) Smith.
He was a lifelong resident of Kosciusko County. He was a graduate of Silver Lake (High School). On Nov. 28, 1954, he was united in marriage to Kay D. Freed at the Eel River Church of Brethren. He proudly served his county in the United Sates Army from 1954-1959 and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas as a SP 4 Medical Corp. From 1959-1963 he was enlisted in the United States Army Reserve, Med Corp. In 1963 the Smith’s returned to the Warsaw area and opened/founded Smith Appliances; which has operated in town for over 50 years. He was a member of the Lakeland Kiwanis, a board member at Baker Boys Club and was also a former Lions Club member. He enjoyed fishing, he was also an avid mushroom hunter and even traveled to Michigan and Wisconsin to mushroom hunt. He very much enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, which he loved dearly.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years: Kay D. Smith of Warsaw; sons: Brian D. Smith of Warsaw; Kevin L. Smith of Fort Myers, Fla.; grandchildren; Candace and Kameron Smith, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; Bryce Smith of Sarasota, Fla.; Mallory Smith of Orlando, Fla.; sisters; Marilyn Anglin of Warsaw and Cathy Wertenberer of Claypool, also survives.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. A funeral service will be held at noon, Friday, April 5, with calling one hour prior to the service in McHatton-Sadler Funeral Chapel, Warsaw. Pastor Jeff Pfeifer will officiate the Funeral Service. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Warsaw.
