SOUTH BEND — South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg officiated a couple’s wedding about 45 minutes before the woman had a cesarean section performed to welcome the city’s newest resident.
The mayor said he has very little unstructured time these days, but he met the couple as they were coming off the elevator Monday around 8:15 a.m. Once he heard their story, he said in a Facebook post he was more than willing to forfeit some of his unstructured time to help the happy couple.
The couple, Mary and Gabe, told Buttigieg they were on their way to the hospital and hoped he would officially wed them before the C-section.
The operation was scheduled for 9 a.m., so, with little time to waste, the mayor and the expectant couple sprung into action.
“She had the paperwork and everything in a folder along with her hospital papers, and they wanted to see if I could do the honors,” Buttigieg said in the Facebook post. “Obviously, there’s only one answer to that question.”
With staff members serving as witnesses and ribbons standing in as rings, Buttigieg officiated their wedding.
Born minutes after the impromptu ceremony was Jade Katherine Jones. The mayor received a photo of the baby girl Monday afternoon.
“It’s moments like this that I’ll miss when my term as mayor comes to an end,” Buttigieg said in the post.
