Sheriff’s Office Warns Of Telephone Scam
KOSCIUSKO — On March 30, the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to an attempted telephone scam. During the course of the investigation, it was determined that the suspects falsely identified themselves as Captain Kenny and Sergeant Newsome, of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office. Those names do not match current employees of the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the complainant, the suspects requested $4,000 in Google Play cards, to satisfy an outstanding arrest warrant. The money was to be taken to a kiosk at the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office. Due to current technology, scammers are able to make it appear that the telephone calls are originated locally. The second call that was received displayed “Kosciusko County Sheriff” on the caller ID, which does not actually appear when telephone calls originate from county extensions.
It is not standard practice for any law enforcement agency to request Google Play cards, let alone any type of payment over the telephone. Anyone receiving suspicious telephone calls is urged to limit the information you provide and to contact local law enforcement, if there fraudulent activity.
