Colin Gordon Bates was born April 7, 1961, in Summit, N.J., to the late Joel G. Bates, originally from Syracuse, and Dolores Marie Chelko Bates of Natrona Heights, Penn.

He spent his early childhood in Pittsburgh, Penn. before moving to Houston, Texas, where he attended Cy-Fair High School. He attended Indiana University and was a member of Theta Chi fraternity. He graduated from Texas A&M University and worked in the computer science field for a number of employers including Compaq and Exxon Chemical. He retired to Jacksonville Beach, Fla. in 2017 where he passed away Feb. 24, 2019.

He is preceded in death by his father, Joel, and survived by his son Lt. John Bates, his son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Meaghan Bates, and son Philip Bates; his mother, Dolores Bates; his brother and sister-in-law, Greg and Ute Bates; his sister and brother-in-law, Allison and Paul Free, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Friday, March 29, at the Eastlund Funeral Home. A Rosary will be held at 6 p.m., with Father Andrew Nazareth officiating. A mass will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 30, at St. Martin de Porres Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Warsaw.
