Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation Named A #GoOPEN Launch District
AKRON — On March 6, Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation was officially named a #GoOpen Launch District by the United States Department of Education and the Indiana Department of Education.
Currently, there are 98 school districts in the country and only five in the state of Indiana. Tippecanoe Valley School Corporation is proud to announce that TVSC is only the 6th corporation in the state approved as a #GoOpen district and have joined prominent school corporations such as East Noble School Corporation, Hamilton Southeastern Schools, Noblesville School District, MSD Warren Township and MSD Southwest Allen County.
In 2016, the United State Department of Education announced the launch of a #GoOpen initiative by encouraging states to transition from a static textbook to high quality, openly licensed education resources in their schools. Fourteen states launched the initiative and Indiana was on the initial list of adopters.
This initiative moves districts from an adopted textbook that wasn’t written for Indiana standards and confined to the textbook adoption cycle. This initiative builds curriculum to replace a textbook using Open Educational Resources. The curriculum can be created by a grade or content level team – utilizing our best assets, our own teachers. There is a process, rubrics, and support from the USDOE, IDOE and from rock star curators throughout the state and country.
Benefits are numerous such as providing or increasing equity in the curriculum regardless of zip code, having access to high-quality learning materials, and have the most up-to-date and relevant content. Districts can reallocate the textbook money to pay for teachers to build the personalized curriculum, meet every year to evaluate curriculum and make changes. The teachers can evaluate what went well and what could be improved and make the changes each year. When districts adopt a textbook they are with the content for six years. TVSC believes this initiative will bring the most relevant, engaging and high-quality curriculum to our district and especially to our students.
The first adopters for TVSC is the Tippecanoe Valley High School English/language arts department. TVSC would like to celebrate forward-thinking educators and empower teachers as they transition to digital learning curriculum and learning environments. TVSC believes their teachers are their best assets.
TVHS also announces an opening for a teacher in the high school English/language arts department for the 2019-2020 school year to join this exciting #GoOpen initiative with the team. Please Contact Chad Cripe, TVHS Principal, or send resume for confidential consideration to [email protected].
