Wawasee Student Dunivan Competing At Radio State Contest
SYRACUSE — He’s a familiar voice on the air between 9 a.m. and noon weekdays on 93.7 FM The Mix, the radio station generating from Wawasee High School and one of the many programs offered by the Pathways Cooperative. Wawasee Senior Cory Dunivan will soon get a chance to show if he is the best on air radio personality among high school broadcasters in Indiana.
In the radio on air personality category, which will be the first time for Pathways to enter a student in this category, Dunivan will compete against five other students to be named the best in the state by the Indiana Association of School Broadcasters. The competition will be held at the University of Indianapolis Monday, March 11, and Dunivan is scheduled to be on the air at 10:40 a.m.
“He will be live on the university radio station and get a chance to show his skills,” said Jeremy Van Lue, Pathways radio/TV instructor.
A four-year student of Van Lue, Dunivan discovered he enjoyed radio after only taking the class to fill in his schedule as a freshman. “I had originally planned to take culinary arts,” he said.
After enrolling in radio, “this class flipped a switch” and is now something he will pursue as a career, though he noted his biggest dream is still to edit or produce films. He also does video productions at Wawasee and has done some video work for the Lakeland Youth Center, The Watershed Foundation and other organizations.
Radio is more hands-on and personal and has fewer students than, for example, a math class would. “It’s not like a normal class,” he said of radio. “You learn it yourself,” and also through working as a team with the other students.
He noted the class has helped him speak better and overcome shyness and also to interact with others better. “Honestly, this class has helped me a lot,” Dunivan admitted, adding he has learned time management skills because there are deadlines to be met.
In a whirlwind senior year, he also is involved in robotics and is filling the role of Uncle Fester in the upcoming WHS spring musical “The Addams Family.” And he finds time to participate in Boy Scouts.
Dunivan plans to attend Huntington University to major in film production and minor in broadcasting. If a film production career doesn’t materialize, working for or owning a radio station is a backup plan.
Radio Competition
Several other Pathways students will be at the University of Indianapolis March 11 waiting to hear the results of the state competition in the various audio and video categories they entered projects in. More than 800 high school students from around the state will be in Indy and the day will start with getting to meet and hear professionals from radio and television.
