Silver Lake Woman Arrested After Police Say She Switched Barcodes At Walmart
SILVER LAKE — A Silver Lake woman was recently arrested after police say she and an unnamed male switched barcodes on items at Walmart to pay less for merchandise.
Shelby Lynne Learned, 27, 3531 West SR 14, Silver Lake, is being charged with four counts of making a false sales document, level 6 felonies, and one charge of theft, a class A misdemeanor.
On Jan. 17, an officer with the Warsaw Police department responded to a theft report at Walmart. The Walmart loss prevention officer advised that on Dec. 7, 2018, she observed a man and a woman attempt to self-check several items using the barcode from items of lesser value. The shopping card they attempted to use was declined and the couple left the store without making a purchase. The Walmart employee identified the female as Learned.
On Dec. 21, 2018, the employee observed Learned and the unidentified male enter the store and scan two jackets using the barcode from ball caps of lesser value. The female was also observed scanning dolls and stuffed toys with the barcodes from candy. The purchases were made with a Walmart shopping card.
On Dec. 22, 2018, Learned and the male again entered the store and Learned completed a no-receipt return for the two jackets and a toolkit. Learned was given a $50.99 Walmart shopping card for the return. Learned and the male then completed their shopping. Learned used the self-checkout and scanned makeup brushes with a barcode from a package of stickers. The male was observed scanning jeans with a barcode from cable ties. A jacket, bra and shaving kit were also in the shopping cart but were never scanned. Learned used the shopping card she received from the previous return to purchase the items.
On Dec. 23, Learned entered Walmart and completed a no-receipt return for the bra, shaving kit and makeup brushes. She was given a Walmart shopping card for $70.06. During that shopping trip, Learned failed to scan wrapping paper, propane, a drill, a jacket, gloves, two toolsets, Mountain Dew and diapers. The left the store with the un-scanned merchandise and did not attempt to pay for it.
The total amount of merchandise that Learned and the male stole from Walmart was valued at $410.36.
Learned was booked into the Kosciusko County Jail on Feb. 21, with a $5,750 surety and cash bond.
