North Webster Junior Sharp Shooters Are Honored
NORTH WEBSTER — North Webster American Legion Post 253 honored its Junior Sharp Shooters Team before practice Wednesday, Feb. 20, at the Legion.
Formed four years ago, the group has grown from four members to nine with another joining soon. Jon Custer is the director and Joe Sunday is the assistant director.
Certificates were presented to members for completion of the written coursework by Custer and a challenge medal was given to each by Post 253 Commander Jeff Spickelmeier. He explained the history of the challenge medal going all the way back to World War I. Possession of the medal saved the life of a soldier on the front from a French firing squad.
The team was lauded for their exceptional behavior and work ethic. Coaches and parents were also thanked for their contributions. Air rifles are used for target practice as well as the educational information given by the program. Targets now number eight up from two in the first year.
Sponsored by the Legion with assistance from the Sons of the American Legion and the Legion Auxiliary, the North Webster team is the only one in Indiana’s second district. When Custer started the group from scratch he had much assistance from the Waynedale American Legion Post of Fort Wayne. Three new coaches will be attending coaching school soon.
Funds to support the team come from two grants from Friends of the National Rifle Association totaling almost $9,000, fundraisers and donations from the sponsoring organizations.
The team will travel to the Seymour American Legion Saturday, March 16, to take part in the state tournament. At the 2018 event members placed well. Suzan Lauber was 12th, Joey Sunday and Myles Lauber were 47th and 48th, Aiden Bause was 55th and Marissa Adkins was 70th. “We are looking for better finishes from all eight members attending this year,” stated Custer.
The team practices 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the North Webster American Legion, 729 S. SR 13, and is currently seeking new members. Those interested can contact Custer, (574) 527-1579.
