Art In Action: Elizabeth Wamsley
By Darla McCammon
Elizabeth Wamsley is a member of Lakeland Art Association and recently accepted the position of vice-president for the organization. Her specialty in the art world is working with clay to create very unusual sculptured pieces. She has won numerous awards and was president of The American Ceramic Society of Southern California until 2007. Wamsley was educated in ceramics at Indiana University-Bloomington.
Wamsley lived and worked in California from the 1980s until her recent move to Syracuse. She now lives and works at her new studio in the 147-year-old bank building in North Manchester on Main Street.
A prestigious award was earned by Wamsley in the Los Angeles Times Critics Award. She has also swept up a member of new accolades and ribbons since moving to Indiana. She will be exhibiting at the “For the Love of Art Show” at the South Bend Century Center on March 2 and 3. You may also meet her in person at the Syracuse History Museum this coming June. Much of her work will be on display and she will also be the guest speaker for the event.
Lincoln Life has long been known for their love of art and Wamsley was recently gratified to learn they had purchased five of her pieces from an Indiana gallery to add to their extensive art collection.
Wamsley’s work is whimsical and creative. She is a master at making her own glazes and she carefully fires each piece to become a beautiful work of art.
Wamsley’s studio is packed with amazing examples of her artistry in clay sculptures and you can usually find one or two of her works at the Lakeland Art Gallery during opening hours from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.
