Syracuse To Have Primary For Clerk-Treasurer Position
SYRACUSE — Syracuse will have a primary election in May. While the positions for town council seats in District 3, 4 and 5 are unopposed at this time, the race will be for the office of clerk-treasurer.
Incumbent clerk-treasurer Paula Kehr-Whicker is being opposed by Virginia Cazier on the Republican ballot.
Syracuse Town Council members Tom Hoover, District 3, and Larry Martindale, District 4, have officially filed with the Kosciusko County Clerk of the Court to run for another term. Bill Musser, District 5, has also announced he has filed to run for another term. All three are Republicans.
Hoover is running for his second term. During his tenure conflicts between the council and Turkey Creek Fire Territory Board have been resolved. Hoover feels there are other issues that need to be addressed.
Martindale is running for his second term, but his first elected term. He took over representing District 4 when Councilman Brian Woody stepped down. Martindale said he enjoyed serving his district and this year is serving as council president.
Musser is running for his fourth term. He was originally appointed in July 2004 to replace Brian Antonides when he stepped down. Musser served as council president last year during which the council hired a new town manager and city utilities director and worked to continue the growth of Syracuse’s industrial park.
Kehr-Wicker is seeking her second term in office. She said she enjoys the challenge the job brings. “There’s something that always come up,” she said, involving changing laws and technology.
Cazier has worked as the administrative assistant to the public works director for the last 22 years. She said she is running because she believes she would bring a professional, kind and customer based service to the residents of Syracuse.
Filing deadline is noon Friday, Feb. 8.
