Before Christmas, Park Board Plans For Next Year
SYRACUSE — Monday evening, Dec. 10, the Syracuse Park Board met at the community center to go over a few end-of-the-year expenses and make a few plans for the beginning of the new year.
Parks Superintendent Chad Jonsson presented new truck options to purchase in order to replace the current maintenance truck, which is more than 15 years old and feels as if it will fall apart at any minute. Jonsson expressed the importance of purchasing a new truck as soon as possible so they’ll be able to plow snow when needed.
With $30,000 set aside in the 2019 budget and $25,000 left from this year’s expenses, there is enough money available to buy a new truck equipped with a dump bed and plow. After some discussion about the different options and consideration of a used truck, the board motioned to accept Jonsson purchasing a new truck.
Jerry Riffle commented Jonsson is working on the Tree City USA report and Tree Growth Award application. Disappointed in the lack of Riffle’s legendary tree sample guessing game, Jeff Nicodemus shared he’ll have to wait until next month to use the tree identification app on his phone.
In 2019, park board meetings will continue to meet at 7 p.m. the second Monday of the month at the community center and are open to the public.
Pickleball and judo continue on a weekly basis. The Breakfast with Santa event sold 1,200 sausages — the equivalent to 420 plates.
Basketball registration is still open for teams wishing to sign up before January. The team rosters and fee must be submitted by Jan. 1, and are available at the community center or at www.syracuseparks.org.
“The Incredibles 2” will play at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, in the gym at the community center. Those attended should bring a chair or blanket for a comfortable showing. A free bag of popcorn and additional concessions will be available.
Registration for the community garage sale March 2 will open Jan. 9. The cost for a booth is $10 with tables available to rent for $5, or vendors are welcome to bring their own. Vendors may only reserve one space each and should note the booth is not reserved until paid for at the community center.
