Wihebrink Riding Wave To Grand Valley State
WARSAW – A tough set of decisions as a junior has helped ease the mind of current Warsaw Community High School senior Delaney Wihebrink, who has announced she will continue her swim career with Grand Valley State University.
Deciding to worry about college decisions as a junior, Wihebrink made her decision before the start of her senior swim season, but made the announcement formal this week.
Wihebrink is a four-year letterwinner for the Tiger swim program, and has made her mark on the program record book, currently holding a record swim in four events. She is the current individual holder of the breaststroke (1:06.19) and is on all three relay teams that have the Warsaw standard – the medley relay (1:50.91), the 200 (1:40.34) and 400 (3:42.18).
Wihebrink has reached the IHSAA State Finals in all three seasons of swimming at Warsaw, making over a half-dozen appearances both individually and with relay teams.
“Junior year I’m thinking to myself, ‘Do I want to swim for another five years?’ and eventually I decided I do,” Wihebrink said in November shortly before the Warsaw season began. “AP tests, SATs, keeping my GPA up, that took a lot out of me, and then throw in swimming and whether I wanted to keep doing it. But I got a lot of that taken care of, and I feel like I found a good place (at GVSU).
“Just knowing that I had that feeling like I belong there, and calling (GVSU coach Andy Boyce) to commit, that was a good feeling. It felt right. It was really nice to just live life coming into swim season and not have to worry about times or impressing anyone. I can swim for me.”
Not just a star swimmer, Wihebrink was also a two-time MVP in girls golf at Warsaw. In the classroom, Wihebrink is a Scholar Athlete, a member of the National Honor Society and Octagon Club and has kept a 4.0 GPA heading into her senior year. At Grand Valley State, Wihebrink intends to major in marketing and event coordination.
Grand Valley State University competes in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, a Division II member of the NCAA.
