Bernis E. Wingard
Bernis E. Wingard, 99, Topeka, passed away on Dec. 3, 2018, at Life Care Center in LaGrange. She was born Feb. 14, 1919, in Topeka, the daughter of Perry and Jeanette (Oesch) Yoder. In Aug. of 1946, Bernis married Harley Wingard; he preceded her in death in 1995.
She is survived by her son, Tom Wingard of Fort Wayne; a granddaughter, Theresa (Thomas) Ritter of Schifferstadt, Germany; and a brother, Willard Yoder of Emma. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
She worked at People’s Mutual Telephone Company and United Telephone company for many years, and was the last living telephone operator from Topeka. She is still remembered by many who can still hear her say, “number please.” She also worked as a clerk at Topeka Drug store and was a faithful member of Topeka Mennonite Church and Topeka Women in Mission.
Family and friends will gather for a graveside service at noon, Thursday, Dec. 13, at Eden Cemetery in Topeka. Pastor Harold Gingrich will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mennonite Central Committee at donate.mcc.org.
