Warsaw Woman Given Chance To Apply For Community Corrections
WARSAW — A Warsaw woman told the court on Monday, Nov. 26, that work and family have combined to help her battle addiction and asked for leniency during sentencing on drug-related charges.
Casey Morgan Dunn, 22, 2003 Oakwood Drive, Warsaw, was in Kosciusko County Circuit Court for sentencing on charges of unlawful possession of a syringe, a level 6 felony; and possession of paraphernalia, a class C misdemeanor.
“Miss Dunn is working 40 hours a week,” said her defense attorney, Scott Lennox. Lennox asked Circuit Court Judge Michael Reed to consider fashioning a sentence that would allow Dunn to keep working.
“This is the longest I’ve kept sober,” Dunn told Reed, telling the judge that by working and living with her parents, a busy schedule has helped to distract her from the circumstances that previously led to her substance abuse.
Dunn’s troubles in Kosciusko County began in May when she was arrested on the drug-related charges after a Warsaw Police Department officer observed her disregarding a stop sign while driving. Lennox told the court that Dunn still has a case in another Kosciusko County court, as well as one pending in Wabash County.
Reed sentenced Dunn to a total of one year and 60 days in county jail, but made the sentences concurrent, or overlapping. Dunn was also given a total of six days of jail time credit.
Reed gave Dunn until Dec. 12 to begin serving her sentence. By that date, a 4 p.m., Dunn is to either be signed up and accepted into the Community Corrections program, or must report to the county jail to begin her term of incarceration.
